Ely State Prison was opened in July of 1989, and is the designated maximum-security prison for the State of Nevada. The facility is located approximately nine (9) miles north of Ely, Nevada in White Pine County. Built in two (2) phases, Phase I was completed and opened in August 1989. Phase II was completed in November 1990. The original design was for 1054 inmates, but the capacity has subsequently been increased to 1150 inmates.
Ely State Prison currently has four hundred six (406) employee positions. The institution is considered to be a major employer in the region, and staff are significantly involved in community activities. Staff are proud of having a safe, secure, and sanitary institution and strive every day to complete the mission of Ely State Prison: To protect the public, the employees, and the offenders.
Ely State Prison’s total capacity is 1,150 inmates.
Visiting days at Ely State Prison are:
- Mondays and Tuesdays (Maximum Lockup/CMU Inmates);
- Wednesdays and Thursdays (General Population Units 5, 6, 7 inmates);
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday (General Population Unit 8 inmates);
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening (Minimum Custody inmates).
Visiting hours are 9:00 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. for all daytime visits, and 4:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. for the minimum custody inmates. Visitors are encouraged to call 24 hours in advance to make sure the inmate is still located at Ely State Prison, and that their visiting days have not changed.

High School Diploma; Mental Health Services; G.E.D.; Adult Education Instruction; Anger Management, Anxiety, Feelings training; one-on-one counseling; Life Skills; Domestic Violence Awareness.
Custom, government and commercial draperies have been produced locally since 1991, and are shipped nationally and internationally. Products consist of pinch pleats, rod pockets, snap-tape, ripple-fold, jabots and swags, as well as different styles of valances. The shop employs 30 specially trained drapery craftsmen, and they are held to the highest production standards. The shop is capable of producing in excess of 500 widths per day. Additionally, custom work for end users such as passenger trains, ocean liners, submarines, convalescent centers, mental institutions and juvenile facilities have been completed.
